How to Prevent Invisalign® Problems

Mar 11, 2022

After a consultation with your dentist on the best way to keep your teeth in place as you age, Invisalign® has come out as the optimal choice. You've committed time and money to the process and you know that keeping your aligners in good shape will help you stay on schedule with your treatment. But what do you need to avoid with your aligners?

Cracking and Warping

Your Invisalign® aligners are made of sturdy plastic, but they aren't invincible. Be sure to take them out before eating and high-impact sports so you don't crack them. You should also avoid drinking anything other than room temperature water when you have your aligners in. Rapid temperature changes can warp the shape of your aligners, making them unsuitable for your treatment plan.

Staining

Part of the appeal of Invisalign® is the increased discretion over traditional braces, but that's only true if you can keep your aligners clear! Don't clean your aligners with colored soaps or solutions, and brush well after eating or drinking dark foods and beverages, like coffee, wine, or berries. Anything that can stain your teeth can also stain your aligners.

Odors

You wear your aligners for 22 hours a day, so cleaning them every time you remove them (or at least daily) will do a lot to keep them fresh. Like your teeth, your aligners are subject to all the things that make brushing your teeth necessary after a night of sleep. If you begin to notice an odor and brushing doesn't seem to be doing the job, pick up a cleaning kit from Invisalign® to thoroughly sanitize your aligners.

At WestLake Dental Care, we know your oral health is an investment with a lifetime of returns. Keeping your aligners clean and clear makes you more likely to wear them and keep your mouth in the best possible shape.
