Repairing Tooth Damage With Dental Crowns

Mar 20, 2022

Have you recently noticed something in your smile that has you looking into cosmetic dentistry? Whether it's a new development or you're just interested in sprucing up your smile, crowns may be the answer to your dental damage. Yellowing, misalignment, chips - crowns can solve them all. How do you know if they're the best choice for you?

Crowns vs. Veneers

Both crowns and veneers work well for damage that is confined to the tooth structure, like discoloration, cracking, or gaps. If your damage goes much deeper than the tooth surface into the gums and underlying periodontal structures, your dentist may suggest implants to preserve the health of your mouth. While veneers lie on top of your tooth, crowns cover them completely. Beyond their application, both methods are similar because they:

  • Look natural.  Crowns and veneers match the look and feel of your teeth.
  • Are permanent. Your dentist must remove a portion of your enamel to install them.
  • Come in several different materials. Depending on which you select, you may be able to choose from porcelain, resin, glass, metal/gold, and other options.
  • Require no change to your oral hygiene routine. Crowns and veneers can be damaged or discolored just like your teeth, so continue to brush and floss regularly and avoid hard foods.

Getting Crowns Installed

You will likely need two appointments to get your crowns. During your first visit, your dentist will file down your tooth and take a 3D scan (No goop), so your crown will fit snugly over your tooth. This scan gets sent to a lab instantly, and you are given a provisional crown to protect your tooth. You may experience increased sensitivity while you have the provisional crown because you have less enamel on your tooth. You should get your lab custom made permanent crown back within three weeks.
