Do Dental Implants Hurt?

Mar 01, 2022

If you need to replace a missing or damaged tooth, dental implants are one of your best options. They're sturdy and long-lived, with the look and feel of a natural tooth. With a 95% success rate, you can have complete confidence that the procedure will be done without complications, but you may be wondering how you'll feel while it's happening.

Getting Evaluated for Implants

To decide if you are a good candidate for implants, your dentist has to know how dense your jawbone is. Having less bone mass increases your chances of implant failure, so your dentist may need to do a bone graft before the implant itself. To determine your bone density and volume, you will have both an x-ray and CT scan done. Both of these procedures are common for a variety of medical needs and are pain-free.

During Surgery

Most implant patients use local anesthesia, similar to what you're given when you get a cavity filled. You can also choose to be sedated for the procedure, but it is not necessary. Numbing gel is applied before anesthetic is injected at your implant site. Your dentist will confirm that you are numb before continuing. Most patients report feeling pressure and vibration, but not pain.

After Surgery

Once your procedure is complete, you will be given pain relievers and antibiotics. Most patients only need to take the pain medication the night of their procedure. Downtime is minimal, with most people pain-free after a day or two. When you receive your permanent crown, you may be locally anesthetized again if your implant was completely below your gumline, but no pain medication is prescribed for the second incision.
