The Difference Between Veneers and Crowns

Sep 20, 2021

When To Use Veneers

Veneers are thin layers of porcelain or resin that your dentist attaches to the front of your tooth. They come in many shades, allowing the wearer discretion. They may be a good fit for you if your teeth are:

  • Chipped
  • Discolored
  • Atypically shaped
  • Unevenly spaced

To apply your veneers, your dentist will need to remove part of your enamel for a thorough bond between your tooth and the veneer. A digital scan of your teeth will then be taken to ensure a good fit. Veneers are stain-resistant and, depending on the material, can last up to 20 years before needing to be replaced.

When To Use Crowns

Crowns, also known as caps, are coverings placed over your entire tooth. They can be used for many of the cosmetic issues that veneers solve, but they can also be used for structural problems like:

  • Treating cavities that are too large for fillings
  • Protecting teeth after a root canal
  • Attached to dental implants

Crowns come in many different materials, including porcelain for a natural look. As with veneers, your dentist will have to remove parts of your tooth to ensure that the crown fits over it, so you may experience increased sensitivity. With proper care, a dental crown may never need to be replaced.
