Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Sep 30, 2021

Your smile is a big part of who you are, and damaged or missing teeth can make you hesitant to share it. If a gap in your mouth is making you self-conscious, you have several options for filling it. If bridges and dentures aren't a good fit for you, consider getting dental implants.

How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants consist of a post and a crown. There are two types of implants: those that are inserted into the jawbone and those that sit on top of the jawbone. After insertion, the bone will fuse to the post, typically made of titanium, so that your new tooth is just as strong as the rest. Once the crown is applied, the implant can be maintained through regular brushing and flossing.

Deciding if Dental Implants Are Right for You

Your dentist will determine if you have sufficient bone mass to support implants. If your jawbone is not dense enough, there are several courses of action available to increase your bone mass. Your health also plays a large part in your candidacy for dental implants. Chronic illness and tobacco use may impede healing after surgery.

How Dental Implants Are Applied

Getting a dental implant is a more intensive process than other cosmetic procedures. Once your dentist has decided that a dental implant is the right course of action:

  • Your existing tooth will be removed and a bone graft will be installed in its place.
  • After twelve weeks or more healing period, your dentist will install the implant.
  • The tooth will be applied two to three months later to allow the implant to anchor itself.

Due to the surgical nature of the procedure, you may experience side effects with dental implants that you would not see with dentures or most types of bridges. If you are experiencing discomfort, follow up with your dentist.
