What to Expect During Your Invisalign® Treatment

Jan 01, 2022

When it comes to your mouth, keeping your teeth healthy is the highest priority, but there may be additional steps to keeping your mouth happy. Misaligned teeth or gaps in your mouth could be causing extra wear and tear on your teeth. If your dentist has recommended Invisalign® to you to help combat the damage, knowing what lies ahead in your Invisalign® treatment can help the process go more smoothly.

Getting Fitted for Your Aligners

To get your custom aligners made, your dentist has to take a scan of your mouth to ensure the aligners move each tooth in the right direction with enough force. With a better idea of the current configuration of your teeth and how far they need to move, your dentist can give you an estimate on the length of your treatment plan.

What to Do Once Your Aligners Arrive

After your scans are made, your aligners will be mailed to you. Some initial discomfort is normal, but let your dentist know if you have trouble getting your aligners to fit. Once your aligners are ready, you should

  • Wear your aligners at least 20 hours a day. Wearing them any less can extend your treatment time.
  • Keep brushing and flossing. Removable aligners mean that your oral hygiene routine doesn't have to change.
  • Clean your aligners daily. You'll be wearing your aligners all day and night. Cleaning them regularly ensures that you aren't trapping food and bacteria to promote decay.

You should receive new aligners about every two weeks, and your dentist may schedule regular appointments to check your progress.

Fitting Your Treatment into Your Routine

Invisalign® is flexible enough to work with any lifestyle. As long as you keep your aligners on for the recommended time, you can continue the same activities you had before your aligners arrived. With Invisalign®, you can

  • Eat what you love. Invisalign® is removable, so you can keep eating your favorite foods. Brush your teeth before putting your aligner back on.
  • Play on. Invisalign® aligners do not have to be removed for low-contact sports.
  • Keep smiling. Your aligners are clear. Traditional braces may have made you self-conscious, but Invisalign® is discreet.
