Dos and Don'ts When Wearing Your Invisalign® Aligners

Dec 11, 2021

Invisalign® has changed the landscape of orthodontics. The clear aligners offer more flexibility than traditional metal braces, but taking advantage of that flexibility too often can impact your treatment timeline. Whether you've had your aligners for a while or they've just arrived at your dentist's office, there are a few things to keep in mind while wearing Invisalign®.

Do

Let your dentist know if your aligners aren't fitting well - Your aligners are custom made to fit you, and if there are gaps between your teeth and the aligner tray, the necessary force to adjust your teeth isn't being properly applied. Talk to your dentist to find out how you can fix your aligner fit.

Continue brushing and flossing regularly - Your dental hygiene routine won't change with Invisalign®. The removable trays mean that it's easier to keep your teeth healthy during your treatment.

Clean your aligners properly - Invisalign® aligners should be cleaned with a separate toothbrush to remove any food particles that may be lingering. You can also use Invisalign® cleaning products for a more thorough cleaning.

Don't

Stop being active - Traditional braces might leave you on the sidelines, but Invisalign® allows you to continue all your regular physical activity. Swap your aligners for a mouth guard during contact sports and keep enjoying your hobbies.

Eat or drink with your aligners in
 - This is bad for both you and your aligners. You could trap food or sugars in your aligner and accelerate tooth decay, stain your aligners, or you could damage the aligner itself. Brush your teeth before putting your aligner back on after eating or drinking.

Leave your aligners out for too long - Taking your aligners out for short periods of time is fine, but aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day for best results. Wearing them less could extend your treatment plan.
