5 Reasons Why Dental Implants Can Fail

Nov 10, 2021

Implant dentistry has become increasingly common in the last decade and the overwhelming majority of implants are successful, with a failure rate of only 5%. However, if you are having trouble with your dental implant, you may be wondering how it happened and what course of action to take. In the unlikely event that your implant fails, there are some common categories for any issues that arise.

1. Metabolic Rejection

Your regular bodily function has caused you to reject the implant, typically leading it to fall out of place. This may happen to patients with diabetes, cancer, or other chronic illnesses.

2. Smoking

Nicotine acts as a vasoconstrictor, restricting blood flow from your heart. This increases your risk of implant failure because poor circulation inhibits the healing process. It is recommended that you stop smoking three to four weeks before your implant procedure for a greater chance of osseointegration, where the implant properly fuses to your jawbone.

3. Insufficient Bone

Depending on the location of your implant, your doctor may attempt the procedure with a shorter or narrower implant. It is best to have the area grafted to build a sufficient foundation for your implant, increasing its chances of success.

4. Surgical Error

During the procedure, a surgeon may make an error that they are unable to immediately correct, such as the depth or the angle of the implant placement. Recent technological advancements have made these errors less likely to occur.

5. Unknown

Unfortunately, there are cases where a reason for failure cannot be pinpointed. Recent research has suggested that vitamin D deficiency can be a source of issues. 40% of adults in the United States are deficient, but supplements are available to increase your vitamin D levels.
