Periodontal Treatments in Sterling, VA

Potomac, Ashburn Periodontist

Are you a patient suffering from painful, swollen, or bleeding gums? If so, you may have periodontitis, or gum disease. You don’t have to suffer from pain and discomfort in your mouth any longer, and the sooner you address the problem, the better your oral health will be. Our team here at WestLake Dental Care invites you to come in and see a dentist today, so that we can determine the severity of the gum disease, and then help to repair it.

Procedure Details:

What Is Periodontal Treatment?

Periodontal treatment is treatment done to patients that are currently dealing with gum disease. Gum disease can occur when plaque and bacteria begin to build up in the space between the teeth and gums. When left untreated, this can result in gums becoming inflamed and swollen. During periodontal treatment, these spaces are cleaned to prevent any further damage to the gums and the surrounding bone, leaving these sensitive areas to heal without plaque and bacteria.

Periodontal Treatment Options

There are a few treatment options for patients at WestLake Dental Care who currently have periodontitis. These may be either surgical or non-surgical, and different treatments may be recommended based on the extent of the gum disease.

Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment

Scaling. This is when our dentists will remove tartar, plaque, or bacteria from your tooth and under the gum using dental instruments.

Root Planing. Root planing involves smoothing of the root to prevent any bacteria or tartar from accumulating again.

Surgical Periodontal Treatment

Pocket Reduction. If scaling or root planing treatments are not enough, pocket reduction surgery may be a good choice for you. During this surgery, our dentists pull back the gum tissue, remove any bacteria that may cause infection, and smooth out any areas that contain damaged bone. This should encourage the gum tissue to attach to the healthy bone once again.

How To Prevent Periodontitis

Gum disease can be prevented by implementing a good routine of dental hygiene. At WestLake Dental Care we encourage our patients to brush twice a day, floss, and use mouthwash to prevent the buildup of plaque. Other practices that foster good oral health include cutting back on sweets and sugary drinks and eating a balanced diet. It’s also crucial to attend your regular biannual cleaning and exam appointments to keep plaque and bacteria at bay.

Frequently Asked Questions About Periodontics

  • Can periodontal disease be prevented?

Yes, periodontal disease can often be prevented through good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups. Quitting smoking and managing conditions like diabetes can also reduce the risk of developing gum disease.

  • What is the link between periodontal disease and overall health?

Research suggests a link between periodontal disease and other health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory diseases. The inflammation associated with periodontal disease may play a role in these systemic conditions, making it important to maintain good periodontal health as part of overall health and well-being.

  • When should I see a periodontist?

You should consider seeing a periodontist if you experience any signs of gum disease, have a complex dental history, require dental implants, or have been referred by your general dentist for specialized care. Periodontists are experts in diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and performing dental implant surgery, and they can provide care tailored to your specific needs.

I've had excellent care for years. Dr. T is great at explaining everything, making it less stressful, and making sure you feel comfortable. Everyone is friendly and service is prompt. I would recommend Westlake Dental Care to anyone.
