Fast and Easy Tooth Extractions in Sterling, VA

Potomac, Ashburn Extraction Specialists

Although getting a tooth extraction may seem intimidating, this is a common procedure that dentists perform all the time. Getting a tooth extracted can be an important way to ensure that your mouth is free of disease and decay. This procedure doesn’t have to be scary; in fact, our team at WestLake Dental Care aims to make the whole experience as easy for you as possible. Learn more about tooth extraction and why it’s so crucial to oral health.

Procedure Details:

When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?

There are a few different reasons why your dentist may need to remove one or more of your teeth. The most common reason is because the tooth is severely decayed or damaged and can’t be saved with a filling or other type of dental work. Other reasons for extraction may include:

Impacted teeth (wisdom teeth that haven’t come in or other teeth that are blocked by bone or gum tissue)

Infection

Orthodontic treatment (to make room for teeth that are being shifted into place)

Non-restorable cavities, which are cavities with severe decay, large cavities, and cavities that have gone through a cracked or broken tooth, among others

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

The first step of the extraction process is numbing the area around the tooth with local anesthesia. This will help ensure that you don’t feel any pain during the procedure. Once you’re numb, the dentist will use special tools to loosen the tooth and then remove it from the socket. In some cases, like with an impacted wisdom tooth, the dentist may need to make a small incision in your gum tissue in order to remove the tooth. After the tooth has been removed, the dentist will close the opening in your gum with stitches. A blood clot will form in the empty socket, which helps to promote healing.

Caring for Your Mouth After a Tooth Extraction

After your tooth has been extracted, it’s important to take good care of the area to promote healing and avoid infection. Follow these tips:

Avoid drinking through a straw for at least 24 hours after the procedure

Don’t smoke for at least 48 hours

Eat soft foods and avoid chewing directly on the extraction site

Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day

Apply ice to your face for 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling

If you have any pain or other concerns after your tooth extraction, be sure to contact our office right away. Our team will be happy to help you through the healing process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extractions

  • Can I eat normally after a tooth extraction?

Immediately following a tooth extraction, it's important to avoid eating solid foods until the numbness from anesthesia wears off to prevent biting your cheek or tongue. For the first 24 to 48 hours, stick to soft foods and liquids to avoid disturbing the extraction site. Gradually reintroduce solid foods as your comfort allows, but steer clear of hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for at least a week to prevent any damage to the healing area.

  • How soon after a tooth extraction can I resume exercise?

It's advisable to avoid any vigorous physical activity for at least 24 to 48 hours after a tooth extraction. Exertion can increase blood pressure, potentially leading to bleeding or swelling at the extraction site. You can gradually resume light exercise after a couple of days, but listen to your body and avoid activities that cause discomfort or strain.

  • Will a tooth extraction affect my speech?

A tooth extraction can temporarily affect your speech, especially if the extracted tooth is one that plays a key role in articulation. However, any speech disturbances are typically short-lived and improve as your mouth heals and you adjust to the change. If the extraction is in an area that significantly influences speech, such as the front teeth, consider discussing replacement options with your dentist to minimize long-term impact.

I've had excellent care for years. Dr. T is great at explaining everything, making it less stressful, and making sure you feel comfortable. Everyone is friendly and service is prompt. I would recommend Westlake Dental Care to anyone.
